Short Break

Yesterday was mostly my break day to hang out with my brother, since he just came home. So at least the majority of the day was fun. Didn't do much art though. Today's going to be a busy day too, so don't expect too big of an update tomorrow afternoon.

Experimenting in Sai!

I decided to explore a few more tools in Painter Tool Sai.

With my experimenting, I discovered the Ink Pen tool! I really like the effect that it gives the lines, even if it is a bit more time-consuming. I also tried out the Marker and Water Tools in the second one, but I feel that it muddied the piece a bit, so I prefer the first one.

Break Day

Yesterday I decided to finally take a break. I still did my daily art, but I took a break from doing anything extra really, especially during the night. Since I haven't given myself many breaks, I decided to just take the whole night off pretty much to recover... and FINALLY giving myself time to just sit down and play a video game for like 3 hours or so. I started up a new save file in Final Fantasy XIII, so we'll see how that goes.

Recovering Slowly

Yesterday was fairly busy and I was still pretty tired out and sore from Survivor, so it was hard to do a lot of finished art. Most of what I did though can't be posted up yet.

Survivor

So yesterday was a lot of fun. The majority of the day (from about 9am until 10:30pm) was spent with my family playing our version of Survivor. It was really tiring, especially in 90+ degree weather, but it was also a lot of fun, and I ended up winning in the end.

So I was out all day, then at my cousin's birthday party the rest of the night. I managed to squeeze in my Pokemon of the Day and Sketch Journal, but I didn't even have any time for warm-ups or practice gestures.

Sharpies are Fun

I ended up trying out drawing with sharpie markers yesterday, and it was actually a lot more fun than I thought it'd be. I've always enjoyed drawing in brush pen, so it makes sense that I would enjoy drawing with markers (it just so happens that my brush pen started running out of ink fairly quickly, so I couldn't use it as often as I would have liked to). But anyway, I did some environment thumbnail sketches yesterday that I'll upload some day.

Yesterday I did Rad's suggestion of doing gesture drawings from cartoons. I did a whole bunch (10 pages actually) from the first five minutes of Aladdin. At this rate, it'll take me quite awhile to finish the whole movie. Luckily I picked one of my favorite Disney movies and one that I've definitely watched one of the most times.

Crazy Dreams

So two nights ago, I had this crazy dream where I was killed, but the thing is... the dream continued on after I died. It was pretty interesting, but a bit scary at the same time. I might end up using this dream as the base for a future story idea. And that is what the piece below is based off of!

This was a really spur of the moment piece. I didn't really plan anything, I just started drawing. And I decided to draw in a new type of style, playing around a lot with line weight. It was a lot of fun to make.

So yesterday was Father's Day and it was pretty fun. I hung out with my parents a bit more after our picnic, and the overall mood of the day seemed a lot happier.

Speed Painting Process

So I decided to try out Goro Fujita's idea of doing a speed painting a day. He has mentioned before that doing a speed painting a day is the main way that helped him improve, so I figured I'll try it out. I'm not going to be 100% dedicated to it, I'm just going to do them whenever I have some extra free time. I figured it'd be worth a try, especially since he's one of my favorite artists out there.

I did a basic two minute sketch just to lay out the scene before I started.

And finally, the finished product! This took me about 45 minutes.

Also, this is the photograph I used as a reference. I took this photo of The Devil's Punch Bowl, a park near a waterfall in Canada.

Time Management!

So I guess I am still getting just as much free time, I just feel more productive now that I have an actual job that needs to get done and deadlines. Putting my time management skills to use! Basically I'm just eliminating the time-wasting things I do during my day, and I work instead for that time.

I told myself I was going to have Speedvore's final design done by today, but I've been putting it off since I was fairly unsure on how to execute it. Honestly I like the second from the bottom right one, but my brother was set on that top right one (which I personally thought came out terrible). So hopefully at some point this week I will be able to make some more ideas and figure out his final design.
