Concepts of Comic Book Me

So it's coming to that point of the year where it's really nice outside, but then there are finals and it's just so hard to stay focused. Plus there's scheduling tonight,  so I'm super stressed about that. Somehow I've been able to sketch a lot nonetheless. Anyway, here's what I've got for this week.

"Self Character Concepts"

These are a bunch of different styles I did of myself in the outfit that I'm pretty that I'm going with. Basically we're making a comic book cover in Illustration class and I am the main character. My favorite one is probably the third one.

"Self Marker Drawings"

Some initial character sketches I did of myself. These are the different outfits that I wear, but I decided to go with the last one to expand on. The one under it is a quick marker doodle that I did to figure out the right colors and feel for my more finished marker drawings above.

 

"Thumbnail Covers"

Some concept covers I came up with. I'm thinking about going with the one on the second page with the check mark next to it.

"Gesture Poses"

Some gesture drawings I did from comic book pages for my Illustration class.

"Acrylic Guitar Figure"

This is the piece that I did for our final in-class day for my Commercial Figure Drawing class. We were given the opportunity to choose whichever medium we wanted to use, and I decided to go with Acrylics. Ever since the previous class, I have felt a lot more excited to experiment with acrylics and determined to improve and learn how to paint with them well. So this was one more step towards that goal, which I will definitely try to head towards more this summer.

New Scanner!

So this weekend I got a new scanner. No more of those bad quality images for my traditional work. But anyway, my family was in town this weekend so there wasn't quite as much time for art, but I still managed to squeeze some in. Also this past Friday was the Illustration Round Table at my college, in which a bunch of Illustrators from the industry came in and spoke with that. So I got pretty inspired from that.

"My Little Buddy"
So after drawing a bunch of stingrays over spring break, I really realized how much I liked them. This is a quick piece that I did this weekend. I decided to play around with some textures in Sai.

 

 

 
"Speedvore Character Concepts"

 I decided to try and expand on my original character ideas for my game-to-be, Speedvore. So I experimented with drawing some various concepts for the three main characters: Gonavee, Sum3, and Speedvore.


"Documentary Storyboards"
Some really quick storyboards that I did for my final Video I project. It's a documentary about my group of friends.

"Illustration Comic Concepts"
Our next project in my Illustration class is to create a comic book cover with ourselves being the main character. After some brainstorming with my friend Jinny, I decided to go with an idea of a comic in which I am the background character. Thus, titling it "Invisible."


"Acrylic Figure Drawing"
In Commercial Figure Drawing this week, we worked with acrylics. My instructor gave us a demo at the start of class, which really taught me how to use acrylics the correct way. Honestly I never really knew much of how to use them until now, so this is probably my most successful acrylic piece thus far.

"Forensic Pathology"
For my Genetics class, our final was to do a research paper on a type of pathology and create a piece of artwork to go along with it. So this is what I came up with.

Beginning of Spring Break

So Spring Break started for me on Friday afternoon and it's been going pretty well for the most part. So far I haven't done too much art besides sketching people, but I've been getting some Liberal Arts assignments out of the way first. And unfortunately my scanner broke so I've only been able to take photos of the stuff I've done traditionally. I hope I can get it working or at least get a new scanner sometime soon.

"Speedvore Initial Character Sketches"

My very first sketches of some of these characters. These are definitely just concepts that will be refined at a later date. So these characters are from the game my brother, Steve, and I are planning on making this summer. We still need to establish personalities and who each individual character is before progressing onward with the final character designs obviously.

"Music Video Storyboards"

Some really quick storyboards I did for my music video project in Video I class. I'm using A Lot Like You by The Offspring as my song.

"Cool Guy"

A quick portrait practice I did of Kazuo Kiriyama from Battle Royale. It's basically just a start, but I felt like doing some digital painting since I haven't done any in forever. I was going for more of a realistic style, but it just looks like a sketch at the moment. I may or may not go back and fix it up.

"Solemn Squid"

This is more progress on my squid painting for Illustration class. I'm unsure if it is finished or not, but I'll see what happens in the next week with progress.

"Ink Wash"

My first attempt at ink wash, which was not as successful as I would have liked for it to have been.

Catching Up Week

This week didn't have all that much art from classes, since I didn't have class on Tuesday and Wednesday. Plus I felt like this week was more of a catching up week where I caught up on a lot of work. I also worked on clean-up for Aria this week, which is a short film being produced by the Advanced Time Based Projects class at my school (I have not yet uploaded it and will not until it is completed). Plus it was Jinny's birthday, so lots of celebrating and good fun. 

"Prince of All Saiyans"

So I've been re-watching Dragon Ball Z Kai with my roommates and so I decided to do some fanart. We just introduced the series to my friend Jinny and she ended up liking it. So since today's her birthday, I decided to draw her favorite character from it, Vegeta. Also, I haven't done DBZ fanart in forever so this was a lot of fun.

"Me With the Face"

Just a doodle of myself. This was real quick sketch I did. But basically Jinny was talking about this one face that I make, so I decided to draw myself making that face. I still need to figure out a good way to draw myself, but this was another test.

"Special Effects Concept"

This is the concept work I did for my special effects animation. I'm planning on working mostly with smoke.

"Dusk Concepts"

Some concept sketches I did of Dusk. She's going to be the character that I use in my effects animation for Animation II, so I decided to do some sketches of her.

"Special Effects Test Animation"

A test animation of smoke and then a short one of rain. These were just some initial tests that I did for my final effects animation.

"Portrait Practice"

A bunch of portraits I did from photographs as practice. We had to do 3 pages front and back of portraits for my Illustration class.

"Solemn Squid Wash"

This is the first part of my squid painting for Illustration class. I did a basic wash so far, but I plan to finish this piece within the next week or so.

"Pubby Ragger Expression and Model Sheets"

This week at the weeklies, we worked on model sheets and developing a character. I decided to develop Pubby some more since I never made a full model sheet for him. I may finish this one up sometime soon so that I can have a finished model sheet for him.

  "Leg Muscle Overlays"

We had to draw the leg of the skeleton's muscles from all sides and label all of the muscles.

 We had to draw the arm of the skeleton's muscles from all sides and label all of the muscles.

 "Skeletal System Muscle Overlays"

 We had to draw the top portion of the skeleton's muscles from all sides and label all of the muscles.

 "Elftair Saosin Concepts"

 Elftair is very serious and is very passionate about training. He will do almost anything to become stronger, and is seen training very often. He can become irritated with foolishness very easily and does not hesitate to take action against those who annoy him. He is very obedient to Altair and the other higher-ups of Outlaw Bar, and will listen to them no matter what.

 "RoaR CrY Concepts"

RoaR is a boy who does not trust anyone, even those who are close to him, because of a traumatic experience early in his life. Whenever he believes he is becoming too good of friends with someone, he will murder them, but his latest friend, Punchy, escaped him. RoaR's goal has been to pursue Punchy and kill him to keep up his tradition. RoaR is very strict on obeying orders, and will urge everyone not to disobey his orders. RoaR has died many times, but every time he dies, he is somehow brought back to life.

 "Mikey Concepts"

 Mikey is a weird boy who longs to make friends. He is an orphan who only lives with other animals who cannot talk. Mikey became friends with Gojo when he first moved to North Harbor, but when reuniting with him later, Gojo was very cold to him, which broke his heart. Mikey always tries to befriend Gojo and is completely obsessed with him, even though Gojo always beats him up. In Mikey's free time, he either cries or uses Big Magic.

 "Refinto Furukizu Concepts"

 Refinto is very much the quiet type. The only two friends he really has are Ralphie and Ted, but he will suggest ideas on where to go in adventures he is on with the rest of The Nays. He comes from a Dojo in which The Nays saved on a mission; therefore being the reason that he joined The Nays on their adventures. After he was killed, Refinto was tricked into signing a contract with Neen saying that he will work for him and follow his orders no matter what. Refinto has turned into a slave of Neen, and follows his every command.

"Corana Concepts"

 She was one of the antagonists from The Nays. I do not have all that much information about her, except that she is Tomocumber's mother.

 "Lupita Burger Concepts"

Lupita is the strongest creature in Biggert City, and second in charge of The Big Kids. He is close friends with Chiz, therefore one of the most intimidating creatures of Biggert City. After he was trained by his new teacher, Lupita became much more mature and much stronger.

 "Kicky Blue Concepts"

 Kicky is a very outgoing boy who loves to imitate others. His interests all revolve around his hero, Scott. Before he knew Scott, Kicky copied off of his brother Punchy's personality. Kicky does not really have much of his own opinion, and often relies on others to decide for him. Kicky is very mean to people that he does not like and usually ends up talking really loudly when he is upset.

"Muto Psy Concepts"

Muto is one of the strongest creatures in Biggert City, and a member of The Big Kids. Muto is almost always seen hanging around with his cousin Trabe. He is a serious creature who will beat up anyone who gets in his way.

 "Mu and D.Mu Psy Concepts"

Mu is one of the nicest creatures from Biggert City. D.Mu is his brother who used to be a very nice creature, but he later became a very cruel creature.

"Yaguzi Anger Sketch"

This was a quick sketch I did of my character, Yaguzi. It was just a scene that popped into my head when I was listening to music a couple of days ago.

"First Charcoal"

This was my first time rendering a model using charcoal. We had two class days to work on this.

"Natural Light Tower"

This is a tower of objects I painted using natural lighting. The light source is from the desk lamp that sits in the still life. This might still be a preliminary painting, but this is as far as I got with it so far. I had some difficulties with getting used to acrylics again after using oils for my most recent painting.
