Exaggeration!

Today was the last day of portrait drawing, which is sad to think about, since it was definitely one of my favorite classes I have had so far.  But today we spent the day drawing our classmates with exaggeration!

Here are the exaggerated portraits.

And this is a drawing from last week. It was a two session drawing with two models.

Portrait Drawing Final

So this week I turned in my Portrait Drawing final.  Below you can see the process I went through to create it.

The final piece

First I took some reference photos, and this was the one that I decided to go with.  I also turned it to grayscale on the right so that I could better see the values.  Thanks so much to my good friends, Emma, Jinny, and Hillary for posing for me.

Then I did some thumbnail sketches of the different composition ideas.  I decided to go with the last one.

And the final product again!

Process Experiment

Other than my Drawing for Entertainment Design class, I have been working with drawing figures and sketching my characters for fun.

A little experiment I did to change up my process. I started with the sketch, then went straight to color and finished it with lineart. It was a bit more challenging, but works!

Some sketches I did to take a break from homework.

So this week we did one-class full body sessions in Portrait Drawing. This was the first one and I had some troubles with proportions.

The second one also had some proportion issues towards the legs, but I liked how the face was turning out.

Personal Work

I've been trying to take some breaks within my homework time to do some personal sketches, since it motivates me a lot more.

I drew this to take a little break from homework and do something for myself.

Another little break I took from homework. I drew my characters more expressively to bring out their personalities. They came out a lot more cartoony than what I usually do.

This week in Portrait Drawing we did more full body poses. We were supposed to do two class sessions, but this one wasn't coming out so good, so my instructor recommended me starting a new one the next class.

The revised version that I did the next class. I think it turned out much better than my first attempt.

Sketches I did at Weeklies this week. We drew from Lilo and Stitch.

Finals are Coming

Classes have been keeping me super busy! I've been doing some slightly more finalized work for some of my classes, and really getting prepared for finals, since they're coming up extremely soon. Just like last fall, finals are piling up on me and basically driving me crazy! A lot of them are really fun and great projects, but so many at once can be daunting.

A quick portrait study I did to try and take a break from homework and warm up before doing more. I wanted to work on my digital painting skills more and incorporate what I've learned from Portrait Drawing so far. This one took about 40 minutes. I took reference from here.

Colored Pencil portrait that I did in class this week. It was a free-for all, but I've come to really enjoy colored pencil, so I stuck with that. This was another two session drawing.

A little doodle I did for fun to try and take a break from homework. I tried working with no sketch and just painting straight on in SAI.

Some quick traditional sketches of Armon I did at the end of class one day.

Gesture drawings from the ASC this week.

Sketching

I've been working a whole lot on Drawing for Entertainment Design, and it is going to occupy yet another weekend. So all I really did this week other than that was sketches.

Sketches I did during class.

This was our first time doing a two session drawing for Portrait Drawing. I tried to focus more on the hair in this one.

Sketches of Armon, the main character of the story I'm working on.

Some concept sketches I did of Lilith, my bear character.

Sketches of Windows I did for my Computer Animation class. I started a new travel sketch book last weekend!

Some drawings done for class, from life.

Jinny and I drew from Looney Tunes to warm up last Sunday afternoon.

I've seen some great artists (such as Sarah and Emma) doing some cool stuff with markers, so I decided to try out the method of coloring in the negative space around the drawings.

Colored Pencil!

I re-discovered Colored Pencil this week and remembered how much I enjoy using them. I also found my old col-erase pencil, which is probably one of my favorite things to draw with now.

Some value studies I did of my friends, Jinny, Hillary, and Emma. These are value studies I did for my final in Portrait Drawing.

We made character designs at the Weeklies this week, based off of candy.

Doodles I did, still trying to stylize wolf/dog-like characters. It's been extremely hard for me, but I will get these finished by Tuesday.

Some gestures I did at the ASC this week.

We used colored pencil this week in portrait drawing. I enjoyed it more, but I ran out of time towards the end and had to rush it a bit.

Breaking CDs

For my Portrait Drawing class, we had to do a self portrait of ourselves using a non-traditional medium. So I chose to break up CDs and arrange them to show the values and shapes to make up: myself!

Here's the final product!

First my friend Jinny took a photo of me to use as a reference.

Then I traced over the image to figure out the basic frame.

Then I started out with a drawing from using the reference image.

Next up I started laying out the CDs.

I rearranged the CDs so that they would fit the shapes better and so that they only cover what is in the shadows. These are a few close ups and different angles.

And again, the final product!

...And not to mention there were a few minor injuries in the making of the project. They healed shortly after though, so all is okay!
