Detective Pubby

For this month's Improvement Movement prompt, I played around with colors and lighting. I decided to take a scene from Detective Ragger for this one. I wanted this scene to take place at night, but I had fun coming up with different light sources and light colors.

These are all 4 of the variations together!

This is the original with flat colors.

And the process it took to get the flats laid out.

First I did the window lighting.

And here's the window lighting process.

Then I tried out moonlighting.

And this is the process for getting to the moonlighting.

And finally, the police car lighting.

And the final process for the police car lighting.

Mr Dude's House Floor Plan & Illustration

Mr Dude's house is basically his own private World Leader Headquarters while Ginko and the White Cloaks rule his World. This is where he sleeps and does all of his timeline research. It's also the area where The Nays visit when they're in this World.

I did this floor plan for this month's Improvement Movement!

And then I drew a view of the inside of Mr Dude's house, based on the above floor plan. I wanted to focus on the Timeline wall, since that's what he's most known for. This is one of the most important parts of his house that he focuses on and references every day of work.

Clove Meets Ralphie

On one of my days off, I took the opportunity to spend some time on an illustration, since I've been meaning to do more of those!

Clove finally meets her brother Ralphie in her dreams. I wrote this Eventure the other day, so I wanted to do a little illustration of one of the scenes. Also played around a bit with lighting in this one.

And then here's the process!

Vehicle Concept Art

For May's Improvement Movement, I drew characters riding on a vehicle I designed back in March.

Here's the final illustration!

Improvement Movement: Vehicles

I designed a bunch of vehicles in The Nays for the Improvement Movement!

For this month's Improvement Movement, the prompt was to draw some vehicles! This is something I struggle with a lot, so I went ahead and just sketched out a bunch of ideas for various vehicles that I've wrote into The Nays. There are more than these ones, but I drew a good variety.

Here's a breakdown of all of the ones pictured:

  • Malcolm's Speed Boat: I realize this is more like a large ship that Malcolm might not be able to afford, so maybe this is a ship that Celia's family owns and maybe the North Harbor residents go on cruises in it. His speed boat might actually be something a bit smaller and cramped, but I didn't think about this until after I already finished drawing this concept.
  • Kolo's Linkship: Based on a more round design that NimbusStev made up, this might be the linkship that Kolo drives with the S Nays.
  • Cipo's Linkship: An idea for a linkship that Cipo pilots. I based the overall design on a tape recorder, because when we used to play with toys, we would use tape recorders as the linkships. I imagine it opens from the top like a tape recorder, and there's a ladder on the side for them to get out of it.
  • CPO Linkship (alt): This was the first idea I had for a linkship, but not so sure if I like how it came out. That's why I drew the design above it instead.
  • Mr Dude World Police Car: This is the car that Rabiah and Johnny steal from the police to rescue Scott, Aya, and Jennie during the War on Mr Dude World Eventure.
  • Pidge Flyer: This is a glass box that Pidgebeetle owns and often transports The Nays around in. It's made from glass and wood, and is powered by the top strings. You can see Pidgebeetle piloting it in this image. I imagine that Pidgebeetle attaches his wings to the strings, flaps his wings, and it makes the outer wings flap. So it can only really be powered by a bird, which is fitting for Tag World.
  • Cipo's Bike: Cipo obsesses over his bike, but it's just a normal bike with CPO on the side of it.
  • Slyro's New Wagon: A covered wagon powered by a bug creature that Slyro shows off to Hawkin and Pidgebeetle during the Return to Muko Inc. Eventure. The Nays steal it from him, which is why I drew Shaw in there piloting it.
  • Party Sanctuary Mine Cart: The mine cart that Bobby escapes from the Party Place with the M Nays in, during the Escape from the Party Place Eventure. It can fit around 25 people in it, which works perfectly for the group they need. This is why the M and S Nays need to split up so they can all fit.

Aya to the Rescue

This was a scene that was really vivid while I was writing it, so I decided to draw it. I really need to go back and actually rewrite the Shitaka Fireworks Eventure so it can show the backstory of what actually happened.

Scott gets arrested for his crimes in Shitaka City, but Aya comes to his rescue and breaks him free.

And then here's a process gif for this illustration!

Fun Times at Work

I've been able to do a bunch of little sketches at work during some of our workshops and other various activities!

We had to design a mech off of an object, so I chose bubble tea! This is a flying airship basically that runs off of bubble tea. I took some reference from the machines that make bubble tea.

We did some learning at work when I first started and I got to learn about how to make a DnD character and some other things! So much fun.

Sketchbook Eventure Planning

I planned out some places, costumes, and characters before writing recent Eventures.

These were concepts for a new character named Fabiana. The bottom right image on the second sheet is what I decided her final look will be based on.

Some initial concept sketches to plan out what Rasake and Matoko's wedding area looks like. Also their wedding clothes.

The Nays Exam Floor Plans

I've been creating some floor plans to help plan out what certain locations will look like in my story.

In The Nays Exam, there's a trust test where one partner must lead the other to the glowing areas while blindfolded. This is actually based on an activity I did with some family members a few years back. I wanted to make a floor plan so it'd be easier to write this part though, with directions.

These are all very rough floor plans that helped me while I was writing, but are very very rough. All three of these are escape rooms.

Experimenting with Sizes!

These are some quick illustrations that I wanted to give a more finished look to than my regular sketches. I also played around with different sizes for them.

I wanted to play around with colored lighting, and I thought drawing a scene from the Bobolo River would fit perfectly! This is when The Nays first begin to realize that the spirits of the Bobolo River are playing tricks on them.

When Rasake gets married, she sends out her invitations in video form, since most of her friends don't have permanent addresses that she can mail them to. Digital files send faster than physical mail between Worlds, anyway.

Nona in the Smoke

It's been awhile since I've dedicated some time to gesture drawings since I've been so busy, but I decided to do that the other week. And from there, I made a finished drawing!

Here's the finished illustration!

And then the process gif.

As a bonus, here are all of the quick gestures I did in about 1-3 minutes each.

Selfie Concept Sunday!

When Zandra and Yaguzi are released from the Rectory of Reform, Cipo holds an M Nays Reunion Party in hopes to welcome them back into the group. Amelia excitedly takes a selfie with them because it's a big event. They're not exactly expecting it and are caught by surprise.

Here's the final drawing that I did!

And this is a gif to showcase the process. I ended up putting a bunch of filters on it because I was hoping to get an "Instagram filter" effect through Photoshop. I'm not going to go into the details, but you can check out the gif to see what I added.

And then this was the drawing BEFORE adding all of the filters.

Chasing the Bootleggers in the Lakewood Library

This week's Concept Sunday drawing takes place during the Lakewood Library Eventure when Elfno and the rest of The Nays are chasing after the bootleggers. When my brother was reading this part, I envisioned a really cool shot, so I decided to do an illustration of it!

This is the part that he wrote for the Eventure:
<Chozu> Ew, the other two are getting away though!
<Elfno> Yes! Towards the pop-up book section!
* Elfno leads the others into the children's area. One of the tao faces stops for a moment to throw a bunch of stuffed animals at The Nays.
* Elfno whips out his sword and slices through a stuffed bear, causing fur and cotton to fly in every direction.

Here's the final illustration!

I also decided to do a quick animated version by moving the illustration elements around.

This is a gif showcasing my process.

And here's the process in image progression form:
The initial sketch to figure out the composition.

I cleaned up the line art for Elfno and the background.

I cleaned up the line art for the bear and stuffing.

I added some base colors.

I added shading to all of the elements.

I blurred some elements and added some action lines to indicate motion.

And the final version, where I lightened and blurred the action lines a bit.

Gair Vs. Veetoff Dream

One night the other week, I had a dream that Gair and Veetoff flew into each other like the beginning of the fights in DBFighterZ, so I made this illustration based on it! I decided to spend a bit more time on this one to make up for missing a Concept Sunday to participate in the Global Game Jam. I'm going to count it as a Concept Sunday drawing even though it wasn't on a Sunday.

Here's the final drawing!

Since it was an action scene, I decided to animated it a bit as well.

Here's a gif of the process.

And the process explained:

It started with the basic sketch.

Then I cleaned up the lines.

I decided the action lines were a bit too distracting, so I took them out.

I added the basic colors.

Then I created a background to indicate the impact.

I rendered in the shadows.

Then I added some color to the lines.

I blurred out the background to make it feel like it was in motion more. I also added some blur on the characters.

I adjusted the blurs so that their faces and hands were in focus.

I added in the action lines, but this time I made them white, blurred, and transparent, so that they don't take away from the illustration. I also moved Gair's position back a bit.

And for the final, I overlayed some darks and lights!
