Human Character Concepts

My final for my Digital Sculpture class is very close to completion, so I decided I would show the concepts that were put into creating it. Expect to see the final sculpt within the next few days!

We had to create a human character that would exist in the same world as the creature we created in our previous project.  So I created Ivy, a girl who lives in the forests and is friends with the creature, O-llie. I got some inspiration from the Brazilian Amazons, mostly.

This is her final design, although there were a few changes when I sculpted her. These colors were also messed around with, but based from the initial color studies. Her arm is visible, and I added more vines in one of the sculpts, and emitted them from the other.

These were the initial silhouettes I did.

And from there, I did a few sketches.

And then I made some color variations based from my favorite design.

Stay tuned for more work involving Ivy, coming soon!

Project Deanster: Concept Art

This is the final bunch of images done "for class" on my project, so I can't promise I will be able to stay this consistent over the summer (since I'll have a job and be super busy). But this was a super fun project overall and I'm really glad that I put most of my time this semester into this particular project. It really helped me to improve as an artist, and it helped me to develop the story, characters, and world, for the game before even diving into the creation of the game itself. It was extremely beneficial to the progress.

I did a concept piece of what the text bubbles might look like.

This is a concept piece for how the style of in-game graphics might look like.

And this was another concept piece, mostly to capture the mood and colors of the scene.

These are some ideas for User Interfaces for the game.

And some more ideas for how the text bubbles might look.

Character studies of Deanster.

Character studies of Duncan.

Character studies of Natalie.

And some real quick enemy concepts. I still have to go in and develop these a lot more, but I really want to figure that out once more gameplay elements are solidified.

Logos, Props, and Characters!

Closing up the first major stages of concept work for Project Deanster. And we're finally trying to figure out a title for it as well. Only about a week or two left to work on concepts before the semester closes, then there will be a lot more to work on with the game over the summer.

Some props for the garbage can that Duncan falls into, and for the item that he finds within it!

Logo concept ideas for what the game might be called!

And these are some concept ideas for Stormazark Games, our studio name.

Some character studies of Hunter.

Character studies of Quigley.

Character studies of Penelope.

4.25.14 - Zoo Class Session

We went to the zoo for our final drawing session of Cafe Sketch. It was a lot of fun, even if it was a little rainy. I spent the majority of the time in the Australia section, since those animals were super active and interesting to draw. It made me want to draw some of them a lot more than just  at the zoo. After receiving some feedback from my instructor, I was able to figure out what to focus on and improve on before the end of the semester. So I decided to focus on the motions of the animals for this session. I tried drawing through the animals and really looking a lot closer at the details and proportions.

I really missed drawing people from life, since the past few weeks we have been drawing only animals, so I decided to draw some of the people walking around the zoo towards the end.

Back in the Sketch Books

I have been trying to use my sketch book a lot more this week, since it seems I have been neglecting it for the cintiqs as of recently.

This is Bloods, a husky that Scott rescues in South City and brings home as his own.

Some sketches I did in class earlier this week.

I tried out watercolor life studies on the quad. I started with some environment studies, then I moved on to some quick gestures and silhouettes.

Break from Finals

Some various pieces I've been working on this week. Trying to take a little break from 3D homework.

My entry for this week's Weeklies Challenge. This is my character, Shimahari Kiyo.

A little sketch of my character, Lemon Lime.

Tried to re-design this little guy, but the color scheme didn't come out as appealing as I would have hoped for.

A little discussion I had with my brother led to this one. Pigger's favorite food is Clam Chowder and he steals it from the local fish restaurant.

Some gestures I did before an Artist Talk this week.

4.18.14 - Zoo Class Session

We went to the Columbus Zoo for class this week! It was super nice out, so it was a lot of fun. We got to draw a wide variety of animals and weren't just limited to the ones inside. We focused more on longer drawings with more details in them, rather than quick gestures. It was a bit difficult, especially with the animals that moved around a lot. But it was a really fun exercise!
