Massive Update

Hey it's been awhile!

I was unable to scan anything until recently since I had left my scanner cord back at home. But I've been back at CCAD for my second semester of sophomore year since mid-January. And these 18 credit hours have been keeping me preeetty busy. Five of them are studio classes, two of them being six hour classes. So lots of fun. Since I have so much to upload, I'm going to categorize these by classes to organize it a bit more. My video and photography assignments are not going to be here since those aren't exactly my field of interest.

So enjoy this massive update!

Animation II
"Gesture to Sound Animation"
This assignment dealt with animating character gestures to a sound animation. I decided to go with the story of Basa allowing Gair to temporarily join the Field Ravens. I had a lot of fun with animating the expressions, especially with Gair towards the end. This was probably my favorite animation to work on thus far, because I felt like I didn't struggle with it as much and I felt like I was able to draw fairly loose with these gestures.

"Basa Micato Model Sheet"
Since I decided to include two characters in my gesture to sound animation, I made a model sheet for Basa. It's not a finished model sheet, but it's enough for me to get down his basic shapes and how to draw him.

"Gair and Basa Concept Sketches"
Some quick gestural character sketches I did of both Gair and Basa before animating my gesture to sound animation so that I could get the right feel to it.

"Character Weight Animation"
We had to take a character and animate them picking up a light object and then attempting to pick up a heavy object. So I chose my main character, Gair. He's picking up a light basket of laundry and then attempts to pick up a dryer, but fails.

"Timing of Falling Masses"
Practice tests of falling masses. The animation itself is pretty self-explanatory.

"Ratcliffe Clean-up Exercise"
We basically had to rough out and clean up this short sequence of Ratcliffe from Pocahontas (Although I did not draw the first, ninth, or twenty-first frames, I merely colored those).

"Gair Saku Model Sheet"
My main character, Gair. This is not how he currently looks, but how he looked when he was twelve years old.

"Animation Character Sketches"
Some quick character sketches just experimenting with different shapes of characters. This was what I did when deciding which character to use for my animations.

"Warm-up Gestures"
Some warm-up gestures I did in class of the cartoons we watched.

Intro to Illustration
"The Lonely Yodeler"
Final iconic design for a children's book cover: The Lonely Yodeler. I had to tie together Yodeler, Observatory, and Fountain and this is what I came up with.

"Iconic Thumbnails"
Thumbnails done for the above project.

"Hand Studies"
Three quick pages of hands in a bunch of different mediums.

"Yodeling into the Night Sky"
A narrative piece that I did involving the words Yodeler, Observatory, and Fountain. This was one of my first times ever using watercolors, so it was a bit of a challenge. The rest of the piece is done in colored pencil.

"Yodeler Rough Draft"
Rough color study for the above piece.

"Yodeler Value Study"
Rough value study for the above piece.

"Car Fixing Scientist"
Color study of a concept using the words lanky scientist, truck, and garage.

"Blessed Soldier"
Color study of a concept using the words soldier, backpack, and cathedral.

"Sumo Stunt Wrestler"
Color study of a concept using the words sumo wrestler, package, and elegant sky scraper.

"Narrative Thumbnails"
A bunch of thumbnails done for the above narrative pieces.

"The Mug and the Egg"
Fully rendered value study of an egg and a mug.

"Valued Narrative Study"
First real assignment done for the class. It was basically to tell a narrative using a room with a window, a ball, a floating box, and an object that we were given; in my case, it was an old toy car.

"Initial Thumbnail Studies"
Thumbnails done for the above assignment.

Commercial Figure Drawing
"Ink Study"
This recent week we began working with ink, which is one of my personal favorite mediums. It was a lot of fun even though it took awhile. The thumbnail practice is below it.

"Charcoal Studies"
A series of charcoal drawings I did within a class period.

"Beginning Planar Structure"
This class began with doing planar structure and really going into detail on how the figure is formed. It's not the most fun process in the world, but it's definitely been helping me understand how to draw the figure a lot better.

"Sketchbook Studies"
So our main assignment in this class is to keep a sketchbook that we draw in daily. We're supposed to do studies focusing on different areas of the figure as well as the figure as a whole, so this is some of what I have so far.

Free Time
"Weeklies Sketches"
Every week, the Animation Student Collective begins their meetings with a sketch group known as Weeklies. I drew these sketches during those sessions.

End of Winter Break

So I'm heading on back to CCAD soon, since classes start back up on Monday. So just like every other break, I've been doing nothing but working on stuff the last week of break to make up for the lack of work throughout the rest of break. Annd since I am going back, I apologize in advance since I will most likely have much smaller updates or delayed in updates due to college.

"Laughter of Friends"
A re-drawing I did of an old piece. These are my characters, Pearl and Pubby. So I decided to re-design Pearl, but I'm not sure if this is his final design or not yet. This was also a quick late present I did for my brother.

"Self-Portrait Banner"
This was one of my first concepts for the new banner, but I wasn't too satisfied with how it turned out, so I decided to scrap it.

"Banner Concepts"
Some sketches I did as concepts for the above banner I created.

"Kodomo no Omocha - FF8 Style"
I was really just experimenting with digital painting in Sai here.

"Cave Banner Concepts"
Some concept sketches for a new banner I have in mind. I'm considering changing the name of my blog as well to fit with this banner, but we'll see.

"Panda Sketches"
Some panda sketches I did before creating a re-design of my character, Pearl.

"Fox Sketches"
Jinny and I did some fox sketches this past week, and these are what I did. She suggested I draw animals, and I agreed since I really don't draw them often enough because I've never really been very good at it.

"Gestures"
Daily gestures from the past week.

Happy 2013!

So 2013 hasn't been all that bad so far. I've been using my new tablet a whole lot, so it's been making me neglect my sketchbook besides for gestures. But I needed to practice digital art since I haven't done it all that much recently besides school.

"Art Summary 2012"
So since it's a new year, I made an art summary for 2012.
For more information and links to the individual pieces, check it out here.

"Cipo's First Computer"
My first digital piece for 2013! And going with my yearly tradition of drawing Cipo, I drew him with his parents as a young child. Still getting used to using Painter Tool Sai, but still my first finished piece of the year.

"Gair Portrait"
Some portrait practice I did with my main character, Gair Saku.

"Six Main M Nays Gestures"
I was doing some gesture practice, but placing my own characters in the poses.

"Figure Practice"
I've been doing my daily gestures as usual, but this week I've been spending a bit more time with them. I've been really analyzing the figure before starting and trying to make them look at least more finished than quick gestures. I got a lot of help from Jinny this week.

"Improvement Meme 2006 - 2012"
And just for fun, I'm gonna plop this down here. I've been continually updating this improvement meme, but since it's the new year, I might as well put up there what I've got down so far.
Like the art summary, you can check it out here for more information and links to the individual pieces.

Christmas & New Tablet

So the reason for my late update is because of Christmas, being busy with family and everything. But for Christmas I got a new Monoprice Tablet, and it works great so far! So now that I've got a new tablet, I can finally get back to being productive and get some digital art done.

"Lord of Pride"
My friends and I did a Secret Santa Exchange. So I drew Tara's character, Lucy. This was the first piece I did when I got my new tablet.

"Is This... Really the End...?"
A quick digital piece I did before I got my new tablet. This is Ted, when he is about to disappear.

"Pubby and Friends Christmas"
A Christmas present I made for my brother of Pubby and his friends.

"Colored Pencil Sketches"
A whole bunch of sketches I've done so far over winter break. I've found my love for colored pencils. I almost feel like I can't sketch in any medium but them now that I've become so attached to them.

"Squall Gestures"
Some practice digital gestures; I drew Squall (from Final Fantasy VIII) in all of the poses for these gestures though.

"Gesture Practice"
A bunch of gestures done mostly using figure drawing sites; some is from life though. I've done these pretty much every day of break so far. Some were done while referencing the Vilppu Drawing Manual. Others were done during drawing sessions Jinny and I had together.

First Semester of Sophomore Year: Completed!

So I just finished up my first semester of sophomore year this past Friday. It was a very busy semester, as you can probably tell from the recent posts I've been updating with. I haven't even had a chance to really upload anything not for my Design for Media class since early October. Now I'll be uploading everything else that I've done in my other classes and in my free time. Enjoy my massive update:

"Neuro's Evil Torture"
This was my gift for the Secret Santa Swap that the Animation and Illustration Collectives did at my school. I had a lot of fun with this and I really started to realize how much more I enjoyed using Painter Tool Sai after working on this.

"Abra's Concentration"
A piece I did for the Illustration Collective at my school. This was also one of the first pieces I finished in Painter Tool Sai.

This animatic starts out with the protagonist, Benedict, standing outside of a large, fancy building. Benedict's mission is to assassinate Harrison. He faces his arch-enemy Blaine in a race to kill the target. As he runs through the masquerade, he is not only faced with his mission, but he also comes across a woman named Kali. This was my final animatic for my storyboarding class.

Music Interpretation animatic for storyboarding class. This is basically about the beginning of The Nays. The Nays find themselves in a mysterious new place known as The Link Between Worlds. They are faced with many obstacles that they must overcome.

Ted and Doge come across a mysterious box in warehouse. They decide to return the box to Muko Inc. because they think that the owner would like it back. Once they push it outside, it is revealed that there is Lotus, a slave boy, inside the box. Lotus seeks their help, but they are scared off and retreat. This was my final for my Animation I class. We had to make a 20 second animation about pretty much anything.

This was my first time animating to sound. We chose a sound clip out of a select few, and this was the one that I decided to go with. It's from a clip of MLP:FiM with Pinkie Pie. So this animation is really rough since we weren't given all that much time to come out with a finished piece. In fact, he wanted us to keep it rough in order to focus more on the movement rather than an actual finished animation. So this is my character Eather, since I figured this clip was close enough to her voice.

"Marker Sketches"
This was my first time using markers, so I did some experimenting with mixing colors to start it off. Jinny gave me a quick demo on how to use them.

"Colored Pencil Tests"
This semester I started experimenting with more various mediums in my sketchbook, thanks to Jinny. These are some tests that I did using colored pencils.

"Sketches of Me"
So I was trying to figure out how to draw myself. I couldn't really get the right style or way to draw myself though, even after this many attempts. Drawing myself accurately and stylistically is a lot harder than I thought.

"More Sophomore Sketches"
A whole bunch of various sketches from throughout my first semester of sophomore year. The majority of these are my characters, but at the very bottom there are a few sketches of Abra and Missingno.

"Gesture Practice"
A bunch of practice gesture drawings I've done throughout the semester.

D4M: Final Post!

So I finished up my final for Design for Media class today.

I created a website that compiles together all of the work that I have done on this project. You can check it out here.

D4M: Starting Up Backgrounds

This week I worked a lot on the concepts for the final backgrounds. These will be all of the main backgrounds that show up in the game, since they are the main areas visited. I also tested out some concepts for coloring the backgrounds; I'm most likely going to stick with the second style.

Background Sketches:

Background Color Concepts:

This coming week I will be focusing on finishing up these backgrounds, putting together the graphical user interface. The final compiling will be started as soon as those portions are completed.
