1.31.14 - Class Session

This week we stayed in the classroom for the full 6 hours of Cafe Sketch.  We started out by doing exercises where we drew figures using the block and tube method. It really helped me to think in shapes a lot more clearly, but when we started to draw from life, I was a bit caught up on accuracy rather than drawing as loosely. I need to work on that more in the future, so that my drawings can look more alive.

An initial exercise to get used to drawing the shapes.

We drew these five minute gestures from Pixelovely.

In the afternoon we had a model and did two minute gestures, keeping the tube shapes in mind, but not actually using them.

More Characters!

I worked a lot on developing my two main characters as well as making some simple silhouette ideas for some of the other characters. They are all extremely rough and in the making, so none of these with be used for the final. It was really just for me to flesh out some ideas in my head.

A digital sketch of Duncan. Trying to figure out some characteristics of him, as well as a color scheme.

Trying to develop Natalie's design more.

A bunch of silhouettes for the other characters.

Week 2: Economy of Line Homework

This week's Cafe Sketch homework was to redraw at least 50 of our gestures from class and make them look nicer with fewer and longer lines.

On the top rows are my original drawings, and on the bottom rows are the re-draws.

Snow Day!

So today we had a snow day, so I took a little break.
But in the meantime, these were more drawings I've been doing every now and then throughout the week.

Some doodles I did in one of my LA classes.

Drawings of classmates and my professor during class.

My attempt at characterizing people from this site.

Messing Around

Trying to continue drawing for myself during the semester.

Trying to draw in different styles. Pubby seemed like a fun character to try this out on

Some various doodles, trying to use my Tablet again, since it's been awhile. Also playing around with different styles (Firebreath in the bottom right and Squidwik in the middle are my personal favorites here).

Doodles of Pubby during a bad week.

Some doodles I did to try and warm up one day.

Week 2: The Chiller

Today we started off class with some exercises to really get our hands moving and our minds ready to draw. It really felt like it helped a lot. At first I wasn't sure if it was working, but once we moved on to gestures, I realized I was a lot more focused to work.

These are the exercises.

Then we drew from Pixelovely for the remaining of the morning.

After our break, in the afternoon, we went to the Chiller and drew the ice skaters.  It was a really cool experience, since I had never been to an ice skating rink before. Watching the ice skaters, it was a really great reference for lots of action and interesting movements.

Gap Project Begins

I've been working on my Gap Project for one of my classes. Basically I'm using this time to work on the concept art for my brother and I's game, which we are currently calling Project Deanster, until we can figure out the real name. I turned in a lot more story and character names for my proposal, but below is the art I did this week.

Sketches of The Deanster.

Silhouettes for Duncan, the main character.

Silhouettes for Natalie, the assistant main character.

Some face concepts for Duncan.

Personal Doodles

Some various stuff I've been doing throughout the week for myself. I told myself I would draw a little bit for myself every single day this year, so I'm trying to keep that up.

Some sketches I did before bed a few days.
